“You may enjoy life more if you experiment liberally,” said George Moore. A lover of family, food, wine, and Temple University, Moore had something in common with another well-known Pennsylvanian. Both Moore and Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, share a birthplace. Moore, however, didn’t stay in Punxsutawney for long. As a young man, he went to Dartmouth College for his undergraduate degree, and then to Temple for law, graduating in 1976.

Fresh out of school, Moore spent 13 years in private practice with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll as an associate and partner. After that, he returned to North Broad to shift his legal focus to higher education. Moore lived in Narberth, and later Northern Liberties, as he worked his way up the ladder at Temple. Moore began his university tenure as general counsel and finished as a vice president in 2007. “George provided wise counsel to four presidents and dozens of trustees on the vital issues facing the university,” said former Temple University President Neil D. Theobold and Board Chairman Patrick J. O’Connor in a statement for Moore’s obituary. “His advice was always based on one simple question: What action would be the best for all of Temple University’s students?” Moore’s bond with Temple students and colleagues ran deep. He loved supporting the Temple athletic teams, and according to his obituary in The Temple Times, his opinions at basketball games could be heard echoing throughout the arena. Moore also hosted tailgate parties prior to Temple football games, where he introduced the world to his infamous cheese sausages. At work, Moore was the director and corporate secretary for the Temple Law Foundation and Temple Education Support Services. From 1990-2007, he taught at the Beasley School of Law as an adjunct faculty member. Outside of the office, Moore spent time with his family, and had hobbies that were as wide and varied as his interests—working on an incurable golf swing to discovering new bands. When he passed away in 2014, Moore was remembered in a ceremony on campus where a friend told The Temple Times: “George was a wonderful, grand, funny, big, kind, brilliant man.”
