Minimizing the risks of radiotherapy through personalized cancer treatment

Jun. 23, 2022

Although breast cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed among women, most patients received standardized radiotherapy plans which can lead to an increased risk in lung cancer and heart disease.

Subodha Kumar and his co-authors propose a novel framework which physicians can use to more effectively personalize radiotherapy plans. Use of their framework can significantly lower risks of lung cancer and heart disease resulting from radiotherapy, and reduce associated treatment costs by $200 million annually.

As seamless integration of a patient’s data is key for the framework to succeed, Kumar advises medical professionals to continue refining their data collection and storage strategies.
