The Fox editorial team shined the spotlight on inspiring students asking them to share their experience at Temple. While these students come to Fox from a variety of backgrounds—with different majors and career aspirations—they join as a community of voices to share their words of wisdom. Take flight in 2023 with advice from your fellow Owls!

“One of the things that surprised me the most about Temple was just how many resources there are here. If you want to learn about something, you most definitely can.”

"[Attending college] is not just putting your head in a book; it’s building who you are and trying to find your identity.”

“Fox offers a lot of different professional development activities that really help you succeed. One of my favorite ones has definitely been the career fair. It provided a more informal way of connecting with employers.” 

Allyson Grace Yu, management information systems major 

 “Students should explore every resource that a company provides them with during the internship. Use the internship experience to learn why companies use specific resources, who within the company uses those resources and how you can also benefit by leveraging those resources.” 

Eric Bowman, marketing major  

 “I’ve found that most people love talking with others about their job and are usually willing to tell people about what they do. If there’s somewhere you’re interested in working for, consider informally reaching out to a representative on a platform like LinkedIn to learn more about the company and different roles.” 

Evelyn Richards, risk management and insurance major  

“It’s easy to feel pressured to be the best when you’re first-gen, but I think it’s important to make friends and not be consumed with worry over academics, because friendships go a long way inside and outside of classes.” 

Courtney Sabanas, accounting and management information systems double major 

“You can’t just look at answers and move on—you need to understand how you got there. You need to get involved in the material.” 

Kaleb Rush, entrepreneurship and innovation management major 

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable. [Starting my own business] has accelerated my growth immensely. It takes a thousand “no’s” to receive the one “yes” that can change your life.” 

Sameen Farooki, economics major 

“I am part of a lot of different Student Professional Organizations (SPOs). They offer things like mock interviews or resume development workshops. They are a good way of just building out your professional networks, but they’re also a good way of meeting other like-minded students and building a network from the university.” 

 Jake Lewis, real estate major  

“I have had access to so many opportunities through classes and talking to professors who had 20- to 30-year careers in the industry, which is invaluable. They’re not career professors, but career businesspeople who now choose to teach and share that knowledge with the next generation.”   

Isabella O’Byrne, human resource management major 

“I have really gained a lot of connections, a lot of knowledge about HR than just I would’ve learned in my classes, and I actually received my most recent internship because of my role in [the Temple University Society of Human Resource Management] SPO.”

“Being able to take courses that cover a wide array of these really hot topics right now in such a strong department [Statistics, Operations, and Data Science] has been incredibly helpful for me to talk about during interviews.” 

Miles Mack, international business major 

“I was studying abroad with Temple Rome and interning with Mercedes Benz in Italy. I was able to learn customer communications and go through corporate sales, wholesale, as well as digital marketing. Most of the experience I think I have now really come from that internship.”

“Classes teach you a lot but it’s the people and the relationships that you have that teach you much more. To me, that’s what Fox is. It’s the relationships you have with people, with friends as well as professors, that are going to lead you to success in the future.”

“The Business Communication Center (BCC) is an eminently helpful place for students to come looking for guidance and aid on their professional academic papers. Our peer tutors seek to help students retain professional writing skills to ensure they will effectively communicate with not only their professors, but also employers post-graduation.” 

Josh Taban, marketing and supply chain management double major 

“It’s important to build relationships, to expose yourself to different experiences and to take advantage of different resources at Temple to build skills. Just try to make the most of your time. Graduation comes really fast, and you want to be able to have accomplished something while in school—don’t wait.” 

Kelvena Gorley, accounting major 

“The support is here. That is why it’s so easy for us [students] to really get internships and networking opportunities—because all of that is provided here in Fox.”

“I think the structures and the guidance systems here, through professors and the community as a whole, helps you discover what you want to be. It gives you the tools to unlock that freedom in finding out what kind of professional and where do I fit in this massive business world.”
