Create Assignments in Canvas

You can create various types of assignments in Canvas. Assignments can include submissions (files uploaded to Canvas) or hard copy (submitted in-class). Assignments that are submitted as a hard copy can still be graded within Canvas and make use of the Rubrics available. For each assignment built, a column is created in the Gradebook.

  1. In the "Assignment" tab of your course, select the "+ Assignment" button.
    Add assignment button
    • If you want to enter all assignment details of the assignment, click the "+ Assignment" button. If you want to create a placeholder for your assignment you can click the "+" button within an assignment group. This option will let you quickly enter the assignment name, due date, and points. You can enter the details at a later time.
  2. Assignment details include fields for the assignment type, name, description, points, assignment group (if desired), grade display, and submission type, and due dates. You can also specify if the assignment is a group assignment or requires peer reviews.

Publish an Assignment

Students can only view and submit assignments that have been published. Assignments that are not published exist in a "draft state" which is only visible to the instructor.
