Admissions Criteria

The application criteria for specialized Masters’ programs at the Fox School of Business apply. However, applicants who have passed actuarial Exam P do not need to provide GRE test scores.

Due to the mathematical nature and fast pace of many of our courses, we pay particular attention to the applicant’s quantitative background. This must include multivariable calculus and probability (both discrete and continuous).

Other skills and background will likely prove advantageous during the program and/or internships, such as statistics, programming, familiarity with Microsoft Excel, knowledge of the insurance industry and actuarial work, etc. While these are not necessary prerequisites for admission into the program, students are expected to acquire or refresh these skills as needed. Useful resources include (as a Temple student you can get a free subscription), Udemy, Khan Academy, and YouTube, among others.

To gain the necessary background on the insurance industry, MS/AcSci students are allowed to informally audit a section of the undergraduate “Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance” (RMI 2101) course in their first semester (with permission of instructor).

For additional information on actuarial exam tracks and work environment, consider the following resources:

  • Be An Actuary, a website with useful general information about becoming an actuary. (Note: some information might be outdated, e.g. actuarial exams.)
  • Become a member of Student Central, where the Casualty Actuarial Society helps students along the path to becoming a P&C actuary.
  • SOA exam requirements, reflecting the current requirements for actuarial designations with the Society of Actuaries.
  • Introduction to Actuarial Science, a free online course from Australian National University, introducing students to actuarial work and education. The course takes about 20 hours, aims to connect the math you learn in your classes with real-world applications, and includes interviews with practicing actuaries. Highly recommended!
