Weathering at work

Sherry Carroll, DBA ’22, interviewed African-American women with experience working in healthcare organizations to learn how their workplace environment contributes to weathering, or wear and tear on an individual’s physiological systems. 

The participants reported higher stress levels when they perceived their organizations were not adhering to diversity management practices. Over time, this led to chronic stress and negative health impacts.

While current research looks at weathering at the societal level, this study suggests that further research should continue studying how organizations contribute to weathering. Furthermore, these findings may encourage healthcare organizations to delve deeply into the origins of health disparities impacting African-American women employees.
