WHAT AIRPORT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Having trouble figuring out which Rome airport is best to fly into — or which airport is most central? Rome has two airports — Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) — and they’re both international.
If you’re coming straight from the US or Canada, your flight will land at Fiumicino. But if you’re coming from Europe or elsewhere, you may have the option.
Fiumicino is the main international airport, but not very huge, which is great for first-time travelers to Rome! If you’re flying an airline like Alitalia, American Airlines or British Airways, you’ll be coming into Fiumicino. There are four terminals, with 36 gates total – three of which are in the same building, and Terminal 5 (which serves passengers coming from the US and Israel), requires a short shuttle bus to get to. It’s small enough that it’s fairly easy to find the exit, your luggage, any travel partners, a restroom, and you don’t have to walk 30 minutes from the gate to the exit.
Keep in mind, that for departures out of Rome, a smaller airport DOES mean longer security lines (when heading home out of Fiumincino), so be sure to allow yourself at least the recommended 2 hours to avoid any delays! But, it does give you time to enjoy one final glass of Italian wine if lines are shorter than expected!
Ciampino has only 16 gates, so it’s VERY easy to find your travel companions, BUT there are little amenities in Ciampino – and no place for your final sip of Italian wine!
