Fox unveils The HUB as the home for EMBA, new EDBA programs

Floor-to-ceiling windows at The HUB at Commerce Square accentuate the views of Market Street from one of its many breakout rooms. Even on a soggy night, the sight was something to behold.

“Just amazing,” one current Executive MBA student was overheard saying to himself.

Temple University’s Fox School of Business welcomed more than 100 guests to The HUB for a July 15 reception, celebrating the Executive MBA’s relocation and the Executive DBA program’s launch. Both programs will be housed at the innovative executive meeting facility, located at 20th and Market streets.

This marks the first time in nearly three decades that Fox School’s EMBA has been offered within the city limits, moving the program from the suburbs to Center City.

Current and prospective students, faculty and alumni took in The HUB’s lush facilities and modern amenities on ushered tours of its second-floor suites. In close proximity to major interstate highways, AMTRAK, SEPTA Regional Rail and the Philadelphia International Airport, The HUB will foster an expanded market reach for Fox School’s EMBA program, which earned a top-20 ranking nationally by Financial Times.

The new location also will cater to Fox School’s vision for a greater global reach, with an MBA program opening in early 2015 in Seoul, South Korea, and another following soon thereafter in Beijing, China. Global MBA students have the option to enroll in courses at any other locations offered by Fox, and The HUB will make Philadelphia a more-attractive option for international students, said Howard Weiss, the academic director of Fox School’s EMBA program.

“It’s much better to have the program in the city and it will prove to be much easier, especially for when we have events at The HUB and (Main Campus),” Weiss said. “We look forward to building a strong partnership here at The HUB for many years to come.”

A vibrant business center located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, The HUB features comprehensive communication services and state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment.

Primary classroom spaces are fitted with moveable, whiteboard walls, which give way to expansive breakout areas. Equipped with free, high-speed wireless Internet access throughout, The HUB also is in partnership with Stephen Starr Events to provide a top-tier, on-site dining experience. Tours of The HUB concluded at its deluxe 120-seat auditorium.

The HUB will house the 16-month EMBA and the three-year, part-time EDBA programs, the latter of which will start its first cohort in September.

Sharon Guess, a resident of Chestnut Hill, couldn’t help but consider how differently her time in the program – which she refers to as “a life-changing experience” – would have been, had The HUB’s prime location been available to her.

“This is an amazing environment … and it makes everything that much easier,” said Guess, a 2010 Fox EMBA alumna and a senior project manager with the School District of Philadelphia. “This is a good move.”

Fox School of Business launches Executive Doctorate in Business Administration

Temple University’s Fox School of Business announces the launch of an Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), a part-time doctoral program for executives and senior managers that combines theoretical and research methodology courses with personalized mentorship to connect academia and practice.

“Executive DBA students will be an integral part of the Fox School’s vision to be a top global institution for theoretical and applied research in business and management,” Dean M. Moshe Porat said. “We are thrilled to add a new option to the doctoral programs at Fox and to provide executives with important research tools to solve the practical problems they face every day in their careers.”

Starting in Fall 2014, the three-year, part-time Fox Executive DBA combines face-to-face residencies and online learning to deliver a rich, interactive experience. The program offers students a rigorous, research-focused curriculum that equips executives with advanced skills to better address the vexing problems that face organizations, to lead change initiatives, and to transform business practice.

The 54-credit cohorted program includes 10 foundational and methodological courses (taken during the first two years), three research projects leading up to the dissertation proposal and a year of intensive dissertation work under the guidance of a faculty mentor and a dissertation committee.

Students will attend six, three-day on-campus residencies per academic year during the first two years of the program (three residencies per semester). These residencies, which will take place over a weekend, include face-to-face classroom instruction, seminars and networking events. In between the on-campus residencies, students will remain engaged through an integrative online learning experience. Online class sessions using web conferencing are designed into each course to reinforce course concepts and to prepare for the next residency.

During the summer of the first year and throughout the second year, students will work with faculty mentors to develop their program of research. In the third year, students will work closely with their mentors to develop and complete their doctoral dissertation.

A fundamental component of the Executive DBA is the close working relationship between the student and his or her faculty mentors. Under the guidance of the Executive DBA faculty, students develop a program of research around today’s most important business challenges.

“The Fox Executive DBA continues our tradition as a premier center of student-focused, individualized, leading-edge business management education,” Associate Dean of Research, Doctoral Programs and Strategic Initiatives Paul A. Pavlou said. “The Executive DBA represents an exciting new opportunity for those business executives with the talent and determination to succeed.”

The Executive DBA is a fundamentally different degree than the PhD, and they target different audiences. The Executive DBA is intended for working professionals with extensive managerial experience who are looking to transform business practice. The traditional PhD in Business Administration, which the Fox School also offers, is intended for those who want to pursue research-focused careers in academia. The Fox School also offers a PhD in Statistics.

The Fox Executive DBA is intended for professionals with 15 years or more of managerial experience. An MBA degree or a relevant business-focused master’s degree is also desirable for admission. The Fox School will start accepting Executive DBA applications Aug. 1, 2013, and applicants are encouraged to contact program staff before applying.

“Students will develop a program of research tailored to their backgrounds and career goals, enabling Fox Executive DBA students to apply new knowledge and problem-solving skills within their organizations or as consultants,” Executive DBA Academic Director David Schuff said. “We want to enable our students to be true evidence-based managers who make better business decisions by rigorously testing assumptions and comparing alternative solutions.”
