In conjunction with Temple University’s Teaching and Learning Center, Fox’s Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning’s (CITL) is offering a Spring 2012 faculty workshop “Communicating Your Course with a Graphic Syllabus.” Author Dr. Linda Nilson (Director, Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation Clemson University) and Fox’s own Steven N. Pyser, J.D. (Assistant Professor, Human Resource Management) will explain how a graphic syllabus clearly communicates the work, organization, planning and concepts that inform your course organization. Learn how this field-tested approach removes student confusion and their course apprehension learning blocks while engaging students and promoting learning. PLEASE BRING A COPY OF YOUR SYLLABUS to “learn by doing” in an encouraging and supportive learning environment. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 10th at 3:00 in Alter Hall room 605. RSVP to mkunkle@temple.edu so we can have lunch provided to you.
You will leave the workshop with an understanding of the theory and practice of a graphic syllabus and a working document as a foundation for use in your classes next semester. Topics covered will include:
· Limitations of a traditional academic language text syllabus.
· Why some students do not read or understand text-based syllabi.
· Is graphic organization more effective than text based organization?
· What do I need to know to create a one-page graphic syllabus?
· Graphic Syllabus as a class organization and facilitation-learning tool.
