MB Sarkar is Professor of Strategy & Innovation and Stauffer Research Fellow in the Department of Strategic Management, Fox School of Business at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University (1999). He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi (Economics). A visiting professor at several leading Business Schools in Europe, Latin America, and India, he considers his international experiences as learning laboratories. His research centers on strategic issues related to technological innovation & entrepreneurship, inter‐organizational relationships and emerging markets. MB has published several articles in top‐tier scientific journals that span the field of strategic management, including the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Organization Science, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Global Strategic Journal and The Journal of the Academy of Marketing Sciences. MB serves on the editorial review board of the Academy of Management Journal and the Global Strategy Journal, and has served as the guest editor of a Special Issue of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal on “Knowledge Spillovers and Strategic Entrepreneurship”. MB’s research has over 2900 Google Scholar Citations. He has won several awards for his research, including the prestigious 2005 Best Paper at the Academy of Management Journal for his work on entrepreneurial ventures founded by ex‐employees of incumbent firms, the Best Dissertation Award from the Academy of Marketing Sciences, 2000, and the runner‐up in the John A. Howard American Marketing Association Best Doctoral Dissertation Competition, 2000 for his work on inter‐organizational relationships.
MB is currently researching how MNCs are reinventing their business models through strategic innovations in emerging markets. Studying ‘reverse innovations’ in products, services and business models, he believes that the next generation of competitive advantage will accrue to companies that are able to translate their capabilities into solutions that address society’s intractable problems. In this context, experimentation in under‐served segments of emerging markets is proving an especially powerful mode through which the drivers of the next generation of competitive advantage are being shaped. MB believes he adds value by bringing in insights from the East to the West, much in the spirit of the reverse flows of knowledge from the developing to the developed world that we are witnessing currently.
MB believes that continued interaction with industry enables not only relevant research, but also makes for a more effective teacher. MB is active in executive education and has conducted customized programs for several organizations. His passion for teaching is reflected in several awards that he has recently won. At the Fox School of Business, he has won the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award in 2009, 2011 and 2013 in the Professional MBA program, in the inaugural cohort of the Online MBA program in 2011, and in the Executive MBA program in 2012. He is currently leading the international immersion initiatives in India, China, Africa and Lain America of the newly launched Global MBA program at Fox Business School.
