Security & Safety Tips

  • Be aware of off peer-to-peer file sharing: These programs can bypass your operating system’s security, putting your personal data at risk.
  • Update your system software: Set up your computer to automatically obtain the latest software updates.
  • Change your AccessNet password frequently: Create a password easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. Characters such as # ? . and ” are acceptable. Change your password at any time on the TUportal login screen.
  • Privacy Counts: Never share your password.
  • Smack down computer viruses: Never open an e-mail attachment from someone you don’t know or an e-mail attachment with an .exe suffix, such as homerun.exe. Also keep antivirus software up to date.
  • Can Spam: Be careful when giving out your e-mail address, unless you want to be bombarded with spam.
  • Don’t get hooked by phishing scams: Beware of e-mail prompting you to update your account or other personal information. Although these messages may appear to come from familiar companies, they are often scams directing you to fraudulent Web sites. If you do feel the need to respond, do not click the link. Instead, open a Web browser and go directly to the company’s Web site.
  • Beware of Instant Messenger viruses: Instant Messenger (IM) viruses are a new threat! Never download a file from someone you don’t know.
