Accounting

The PhD concentration in Accounting produces high-caliber doctoral graduates who are ready to assume faculty responsibilities in accounting and related departments at major research universities. The department is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members who hold doctorates from top business schools, with several serving on editorial boards for preeminent accounting journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Contemporary Accounting Research. Four of our current faculty members have received prestigious American Accounting Association (AAA) awards, including the Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award, the Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Literature Award, and the Notable Contribution to Auditing Literature Award.

The Fox Department of Accounting ranks within the Top 10 accounting programs for research across all topics since 1990 in Brigham Young University’s Accounting Rankings, and the Fox PhD concentration in Accounting has been ranked within the Top 20 for research in all methods and topics for the last three years. Additionally, the PhD program is ranked highly by Brigham Young University in specific archival areas: Auditing (#4), Managerial (#10), and Financial (#25).

Recent graduates of the Fox PhD concentration in Accounting have accepted research positions at universities recognized within the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education™, including Virginia Commonwealth University, American University, and Stony Brook University, with several alumni holding endowed chaired professorships, as well as senior administrative positions such as dean or chancellor, at other major universities. Some alumni have also received Outstanding Dissertation Awards from the American Accounting Association, and one recent PhD alumnus received the AAA International Section Outstanding Dissertation Award.

Financial Aid

All students admitted to this program are considered for full financial support for up to five years. Funding typically comes in the form of research or teaching assistantship and includes full tuition and a competitive stipend. The funding is renewable every year, subject to adequate progress and annual evaluations. Students who apply before the January 15 deadline will also be considered for Temple University’s prestigious university fellowships.

Tom Adams joined the Ph.D. Program in 2011. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Pennsylvania; he is also an Accounting Doctoral Scholarship (ADS) recipient. Tom received his B.S. degree in Accounting and Finance from La Salle University. Prior to joining Temple, Tom spent four years at KPMG LLP (audit) and two years at Teleflex Incorporated. Tom is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and American Accounting Association. His research interests are in auditing and financial accounting. Tom will join the University of Connecticut as an Assistant Professor of Accounting in Fall 2016.

Joshua Khavis

Joshua Khavis joined the Ph.D. Program in 2014. Joshua received his Masters degree in Taxation from Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business. He also holds a dual B.B.A. degree in Finance and Information Systems from Pace University from which he has graduated Summa Cum Laude in less than 3.5 years and successfully completed his University’s honors program. After finishing Pace, Mr. Khavis was awarded the prestigious US Fulbright Fellowship and as a result has conducted capital markets research in Israel for a year. Prior to joining Temple, Joshua was part of the NYC startup scene where he oversaw operations, accounting and finance for a number of startups. He has also worked in the fixed income technology division at Barclays Investment Bank. His research interests are in capital markets and financial accounting.

Pamela Kuperstein, CPA, joined the Ph.D. Program in 2012. She is an Accounting Doctoral Scholarship (ADS) recipient and a CPA in the state of New York. Pamela’s research interests are primarily in the field of taxation. Pamela received her B.S. in Accounting at Binghamton University in 2009. Prior to joining Temple, she spent three years working at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the tax practice. Her public accounting experience included both tax provision and tax compliance work. She is a member of the AICPA and the American Accounting Association.

So Yean Kwack joined the Ph.D program in Fall 2011. She holds a B.S. degree in English Language & Literature, minoring in Business Administration from Yonsei University and an M.B.A. degree from University of Michigan concentrating in Finance and Accounting. She passed her CPA exams in 2003 and has worked at HSBC Korea for four years as a senior financial analyst at Financial Control Department before joining Temple University. Her current research interest is in financial accounting. She enjoys traveling and good food. So Yean will join the City University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor of Accounting in Fall 2016.

Han-Up Park

Han-Up Park joined the Ph.D. program in 2011. Before joining Temple, he studied for Masters degree in Applied Statistics from the University of Michigan where he practiced pro-bono statistical consulting and taught introductory statistics at the undergraduate level. Prior to the experience, he served the combined forces of the US and the Republic of Korea Army and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for service in Civil Affairs. Han-Up's primary research interest is analyst forecasts. He studies financial analysts' earnings, sales, and implicit costs forecasts. His other research interest is reproducible research in academic accounting. He studies research methods to reduce statistical errors and to translate empirical findings from inter-country data sources.

Neal Vandenberg, CPA, joined the Ph.D. Program in 2010. He is an Accounting Doctoral Scholarship (ADS) recipient. He holds an MBA - Emphasis in Accounting and a BBA, double majoring in Accounting and Finance, from Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Neal joined PricewaterhouseCoopers immediately out of his master’s program and worked 4 years in the assurance practice, until joining the Fox School of Business in 2010. His research interests include audit, financial reporting and disclosure, managerial accounting and international accounting. In his spare time, Neal enjoys traveling, cooking, spending time with friends or family and staying physically active by playing sports and other activities. He is a member of the AICPA, MACPA (Michigan) and American Accounting Association.
