Fox faculty, such as Finance Professor Jonathan Scott, use the state-of-the-art Alter Hall Capital Markets Room to create a unique learning environment. Members of the Owl Fund, Fox’s student-managed investment fund, identify stocks to add or sell from their investment portfolio. All Owl Fund students have access to Fox’s Capital Markets Room, a mock trading room with cutting-edge financial analytics tools such as Bloomberg, S&P CapitalIQ and Morningstar.
Through this innovative financial education model, students are well-equipped for jobs in investment banking, management and consulting. The Temple University Investment Association (TUIA), a 125-member organization that conducts investment analysis education workshops and speaker series, supports the Owl Fund. Each Owl Fund lead analyst comes from TUIA, and each is responsible for monitoring current investments in a sector of the S&P 500 and recommending adding or deleting stocks from that sector.
This real-world experience pays off, both in and out of the classroom. The Owl Fund had 100 percent job placement among its managers in 2010-11.
“Those who are in the Owl Fund have Type A personalities. All of the graduating seniors within the Owl Fund have full-time offers already,” Darryn Lee, a 2011 international business and finance graduate, said shortly before his commencement. “Places like Franklin Templeton in San Francisco, RBS in Tokyo or at Deloitte here in Philadelphia. It is very reassuring to be surrounded by like-minded individuals, and to know I will have something after graduation.”
Lee, now an analyst at BlackRock, added, “In my opinion, it’s the best student professional organization for someone who wants to get fundamental investment-analysis exposure.”
Student Daniel Pavlovic, an Owl Fund member majoring in finance and economics, said access to research and analysis technologies in the Capital Markets Room “have been a great asset” in complementing his coursework.
“Surely this has been the best source for understanding and learning about investment and equity analysis as I work toward my degree in finance,” Pavlovic said of the Capital Markets Room.
