Title of Talk: Big Data and Opportunities in the International Year of Statistics

Abstract: This talk will describe various activities and opportunities for statistical, mathematical and computational sciences, during the International Year of Statistics 2013 and beyond. It will also discuss various funding opportunities big data are providing, during this era of big data.


Breif Bio:

Sastry Pantula received his doctoral degree in statistics in 1982 from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.  He received his B.Stat (1978) and M.Stat (1979) from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India.  He joined North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 1982 as an assistant professor and moved up the ranks to be a full professor.  He served as the Director of Graduate Programs in Statistics from 1994-2002, and as the Head of the Department of Statistics from 2002-2010.  He has been on loan to NSF as the Division Director, Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) since September 2010.  He is a member of the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and of the American Association for Advancing Science (AAAS).  He is also the 2010 ASA President.  He has been involved with the Big Data Senior Steering Group at NSF.
