Compass Rose
October 10th, 2008 ( Permalink )The photo below depicts the Alter Hall “Compass Rose,” a design that has appeared on maps and charts for centuries to indicate north, south, east and west. More recently it has been used as a design element on floors and pavements. There is, for example, a recently restored compass rose in the courtyard of City Hall in Philadelphia. The Alter Hall compass rose will spell out Alter Hall, Fox School of Business, 2008 in red, white and grey. It will be the first thing you see as you enter Alter Hall, between the entrance and security desk. The photo below shows a terrazzo craftsman filling the rose. The view is inside the entrance facing Liacouras Walk. Congratulations to Brian, a staff member in Student Affairs, for providing the correct answer.
Quiz Time Again
October 9th, 2008 ( Permalink )It’s been some time since our last quiz … June 8, to be exact. Well take a look at the photo below and see if you can tell me 1) what it is and 2) where it is. A $20 Starbucks gift card to the first best answer. Sorry, previous winners are excluded.
Alter Atrium Terrazzo Prep
October 6th, 2008 ( Permalink )Here is a view of the main entrance looking from the atrium toward Liacouras Walk. The shiny surface is the base prep for the installation of terrazzo … the same flooring installed this summer in the first floor of Speakman Hall.
Broken Window Replaced
October 2nd, 2008 ( Permalink )At long last that sore thumb, plywood window on the 13th Street side of Speakman Hall has been replaced. Now you can see the new entrance to Speakman without obstructions. The clear glass atrium is meant to mirror both its Tuttleman neighbor and its connection to Alter Hall.
Two Entrances on Liacouras Walk
September 16th, 2008 ( Permalink )The photo at left shows Wachman Hall reflected in the mirror-like glass of the new entrance to Speakman Hall on Licaouras Walk. Fifty feet south, workmen begin work on the steps to Alter Hall’s main entrance on Liacouras Walk.

A Peek Inside
September 10th, 2008 ( Permalink )Work has really accelerated inside of Alter Hall. In the last two weeks we have asked the department chairs to work with their faculty to identify offices. We even took the chairs and their assistants on tours to familairize them with these new spaces. In the thumbnail below you catch a glimpse of the 5th floor hallway outside the marketing suite.
Jazzman’s Furniture Arrives
September 8th, 2008 ( Permalink )With the arrival of cafe tables and chairs, Jazzman’s Cafe is nearly complete. The new space has the look of a trendy downtown coffee house with stainless steel sharing tables and pedestal tables with maple backed stools. There are also loose chair and table arrangements for those afraid of heights (that’s a joke).
13th Street Verticals
September 5th, 2008 ( Permalink )The remaining metal sheathing is half-done on the 13th Street side of Alter Hall. The blue verticals at left are uncovered, the silver ones at right are done.
Mirrored Classrooms in Speakman
September 3rd, 2008 ( Permalink )Intructors prepare electronic materials as students enter classrooms on the first day of fall semester. Here you see Speakman 213 and 212 reflecting the same configuration and technology as every other room in Speakman Hall. The technology template presently employed in Speakman is the model for all Alter Hall classrooms.
